Mr Thakore had the unique and remarkable distinction of holding the post of Advocate-General of Gujarat from the day the state was formed till his death — a period of over forty years. It was a tribute to his fierce independence, dedication to the profession and unimpeachable integrity, said Mr Sanghavi, that despite successive governments of widely differing political hues and ideologies coming to power, not one ever asked for or accepted Mr Thakore’s resignation as Advocate-General. In his demise, the entire profession has lost a stalwart.

Mr Sanghavi then proposed the following resolution, which was duly seconded and passed unanimously.

“This House mourns the sad and sudden demise of Shri J. M. Thakore and expresses its deepest condolences to the members of his bereaved family. In his passing, the Bar has lost a fiercely independent advocate of great acumen and renown who had the unique distinction of holding the office of Advocate-General for over 40 years. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

The House observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the deceased.
