WORKSHOP ON LAW OF WRITS

For the benefit of the junior members of the Bar, a workshop was organised on the law of writs.

Mr. Ashok Desai, former Attorney General of India, travelled from Delhi to speak at the workshop. He spoke about the evolution of the writ jurisdiction in India. In his speech he narrated interesting incidents and anecdotes from various cases which he had attended in his long and illustrious career.

Mr. Aspi Chinoy, Senior Advocate spoke on public interest litigation and how the exercise of power by the Courts in public interest litigation had evolved over the years. In a very informative talk, he spoke of such exercise in the context of Indian social structure and also explained as to how PILs were not the long term substitute for executive action.

Our president Dr. Milind Sathe, Senior Advocate, addressed the participants on the history & the origin of the writ jurisdiction, the kinds of writs, against whom writs can be issued and the requisites of pleadings in writ petitions. He also covered aspects of limitations on Judicial Review- both substantive as well as procedural. The workshop served as a thorough refresher session on writ law. His printed booklet on law of writs was also distributed to all the participants.

This was followed by an interactive session which helped the participants in clearing their doubts on the subject of discussion.
