Considering the growing importance of the capital markets and the legal regime governing the same, the Bombay Bar Association organized a workshop on laws relating to stock markets, SEBI and SAT on 11 July 2015. The President, Dr. Milind Sathe in his opening remarks said that the Bombay Bar Association had started the workshop series as part of continuing legal education for lawyers. The workshops have received an overwhelming response.
The Hon. Secretary, Dr. Birendra Saraf, said that the subject was one which had attained tremendous importance in the growing economy of India. The faculty included the former Advocate General of Maharashtra Mr. D. J. Khambatta, Mr. Pradeep Sancheti, Senior Advocate and Mr. Pesi Modi, Senior Advocate.
Mr. Sancheti spoke about the importance of stock market and statutory regulatory regime under SEBI and SAT in an emerging economy.
Mr. Pesi Modi gave a comprehensive outline on stock exchanges, their bye-laws and regulations, member client relationship, stock exchange related arbitration and invocation of the writ jurisdiction.
Mr. D. J. Khambatta apprised the members of the SEBI Act and the regulation making powers and the various important SEBI regulations such as the Insider Trading Regulations, Take-Over Code and the Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Practice Regulations. Mr. Khambatta also gave the members an overview of the SEBI Appellate Tribunal, its jurisdiction and powers.
This was followed by a long and extended exchange and inter-action between the faculty and the participants during which several important issues of practical and legal importance were discussed. The workshop was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants.
